Sixteen years and billions of dollars invested in the growth of aviation security after the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, threats to airport security continuously progress as the United States’ aviation security encounters numerous changes. Since the September 11th attacks, the Transportation Security Administration, also known as the TSA, initiated their plan to ensure the safety of nearly 2 million air passengers at approximately 440 airports nationwide. (Carraway) Although the TSA implemented new training procedures, the aviation screeners fail to apply their skills effective during searches and checkpoints. In the general public, many claim that technological screening procedures will be more effective†¦show more content†¦It is not logical to invest a significant amount of federal funds into airline security employment if there is a large discrepancy between their current performances and expected results. However, technology utili zes a significantly less amount of funding, but continues to perform its tasks. â€Å"The Trump administration plans to eliminate three airport security programs that were implemented after the 9/11 terrorist attack: Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response program that conduct random sweeps through airports and other modes of transportation, Behavior Detection Officer program that identifies potentially high risk individuals exhibiting behavior indicative of excessiveness then re-routes them for additional screening, and the grant program to support local police at airports, specifically, likely target cities.† (Halsey) These plans indicate that the Trump administration believes that the termination of these programs will increase the budget for the Department of Homeland Security, but does not reduce the number of TSA officers at checkpoints. Bessant amp; Watts, (2007) post-modernist theory states that the mass media is â€Å"simply an enormous factory for manufacturing illusions. †(p. 447) In other words that the audience are essentially mindless drones that act as sponges and will soak up all fallacies and untruths. (Bessant amp; watts, 2007) This theory suggests that people are unlikely to think critically about what they see and hear because what is presented is generally just accepted at face value as truth and the manipulation to great. An example of this manipulation is seen in Germany’s propaganda and in particular Hitler’s speeches, in which â€Å"His propaganda experts created an environment in which both the individual and the group lost their identities and were fused into a homogeneous mass. †(Levyatan 2009). Hitler’s aim was to create a â€Å"robot-like following†(levyatan 2009), an audience that wouldn’t think critically or question the mass genocide to come. This was mostly accomplished through careful manipulation of the German public through well thought out techniques designed to illicit a certain response. Levyatan 2009) For example Hitler’s speeches could start out quite dull creating a sense of boredom designed to create complacency only to conclude with a strong conclusion, dramatisation and a sense of immediacy. Chibnall discusses similar techniques that are used by the mass media. Listed below are eight ‘new values’ used often when reporting crime. (Hayes amp; Prenzler, 2012) The first four are immediacy, dramatisation, novelty and titillation. These techniques aim to control and entertain the public. The media’s focuses on reporting mostly exciting, sex and crime driven stories. Hayes amp; Prenzler, 2012) They choose to report them as everyday and individual events that have just happened rather than explaining any historical or social contexts. (Hayes amp; Prenzler, 2012) As a result the audience can believe that this kind of crime is very common and often doesn’t understand the reason or the underlying relationships between victim and offender. The last four are personalisation, simplification, conventionalism and structured access. (Hayes amp; Prenzler, 2012)These techniques are designed to really connect with the listeners and viewers. The media chooses to write stories about people its audience can already personally relate too such as high profile individuals. (Hayes amp; Prenzler, 2012) Then takes complicated and unfamiliar facts, simplifies it and puts it into familiar contexts that the general overall public can understand. (Hayes amp; Prenzler, 2012) Then finally, cites state officials and police officers to give their story credibility. (Hayes amp; Prenzler, 2012) Unfortunately the result is that the public is less likely to question what they are being shown or have heard and mass media consumption leads to exposure to violence which is inflated and simplified. Below are two case studies that explore the relationship between the media and fear of crime. The first is Curtis’s study of ‘Jack the Ripper and the London Press (2001) in which he explores how powerful the written word could be in London and its ability to drum fear into the masses. (Marsh amp; Melville, 2008) He believed the press coverage during the police search for ‘the Ripper’ was responsible for the public’s growing fear. (Marsh amp; Melville, 2008) That the newspapers exaggerated and built on the stereotypical views of the people and how They viewed the east end of London. Marsh and Melville (2008) said it was see as â€Å"a crime and disease ridden, uncivilized jungle. †(p. 3) Curtis’s study indicates that there is definitely a possible link between the media and its fear of crime. However, a survey done in Trinidad shows a distinct lack of relationship between media and crime. (chadee amp; ditton, 2005) The survey consisted of asking the public different questions about crime. It looked at their views and fears of crime and compared it to the amount and different types of media they were exposed too. chadee amp; ditton, 2005) The results concluded that there did not appear to be an obvious relationship between what the people had seen and heard about crime and their views and feelings on the matter. (chadee amp; ditton, 2005) The variation in results would suggest that other variables are at play, perhaps the cross-cultural differences or social context needed to be explored . The Trinidad study concluded that perhaps people in this cul ture viewed the media unreliable, or the news reports were unmemorable and that the frequency of the reports was unreliable. chadee amp; ditton, 2005) The overall evidence; Hitler’s propaganda campaign and the mass hysteria encouraged by the London press explored by Curtis would seem to support the idea that consumers really are susceptible to the media’s influence. It would suggest that listeners and viewers are indeed incapable of seeing through the subtle and effective techniques harnessed by the media. However, the survey done in Trinidad; accessing the lack of relationship between the media and fear of crime clearly indicates that this is not always the case. This suggests that outside social factors need to be taken into account such as a person’s media consumption, how the media is viewed within that culture and the outside social influences on the individual, such as family and friends. To conclude, the fact then remains that despite the overall evidence because other variables have to be accounted for at all it would seem to refute the post-modernist concepts that the public are unable to reflect on what they see and hear within the media.

For the answer I turn to my Websters Random House New Collegiate Dictionary only to find: religion (ri lijen), n. 1. A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usu. involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code for conduct of human affairs. 2. A specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion. 3. The body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions. 4. The life or state of a monk, nun, etc: to enter a religion. 5. The practice of religious beliefs: ritual observance of faith. 6. Something a person believes in and follows devotedly. 7. Archaic. Strict faithfulness: devotion. Simply stated religion is a set of beliefs, morals, or observances. Sociologists have studied religion and its effects on people. Sociologists hope to gain a better understanding of the need for religion in communities and singular lives. The functionalist perspective, the symbolic interationist perspective, and the conflict perspective can be applied to religion. Religion can be Christianity, Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, Wiccan, or Greek mythology to name a few. Emile Durkeim studied a great deal on religion. He wrote a book that identified the components of a religion. This task seems impossible in a religiously divers society. All religions separate the sacred from the profane or secular. This distinction was outlined by Durkeim in, The Elementary Forms of Religious Life. He also noted that people generally congregate and form a community to practice their religion. Religion is composed of a belief structure (totem), sacred practice (ceremony), and a moral community (church). Durkeim concluded his book with these words: A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden-beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them. The basic function of religion is answering questions people ask to feel personal security. People generally want to know what life is and why we want to live it. People either form their own answers or turn to religion. Those who believe the same congregate and agree on guidelines and rituals of their religion. Religion also allows people to adapt to new situations and instills patriotism. Religious Dysfunction is also important. Religion has caused horrible pains and sufferings. Bloody WARS and crusades have been carried out in Gods name. Religion mixes with politics and causes countries to fight other countries and even declare civil war. In the past religion has justified religious persecution, oppression, and brutal acts. The Symbolic Interactionist perspective looks at the symbols people use. Symbols provide identity and social solidarity. In other words, people know who they are and whom they belong with by using symbols. One such symbol is the Christian fish. The letters of the Greek word fish are the first letters in the phrase, Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Christians could use this symbol to communicate secretly and avoid persecution. A great deal of knowledge is packed behind a symbol. The rituals and religious experience are also important in this perspective. They create closeness with God and unite on a worldly scale. People attach meaning to objects and events and use representations to communicate one with another. Karl Marx applied the Conflict Theory of religion. He was an avowed atheist and mocked those who flocked to religion to fill the void in their lives. He believed that religion allowed people to forget their misery and escape the mundane lives they live. Religions such as Hinduism support social inequality. The Egyptian pharaoh is revered as a god and demands hierarchical social structure. Civil wars develop because of different social ideas of utopia. The Black and White World of Atwood's Surfacing  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚   Many people elect to view the world and life as a series of paired opposites-love and hate, birth and death, right and wrong. As Anne Lamott said, "it is so much easier to embrace absolutes than to suffer reality" (104). This quote summarizes the thoughts of the narrator in Margaret Atwood's novel Surfacing.   The narrator, whose name is never mentioned, must confront a past that she has tried desperately to ignore (7). She sees herself and the world around her as either the innocent victim or the victimizer, never both. Atwoods use of opposing characters and themes throughout the novel serves to support the narrators view of life as "black and white," things that she can categorize as either a victim or a victimizer. Critical moments in the novel work to reverse the assumed roles and, for the narrator, only after her submerged memory has surfaced can she begin to see the possibility of life as more than a binary reality. Anna plays the role of the classic submissive female married to David's classic chauvinist male. "Wanting to remain attractive to her husband, Anna attempts to conform to the eroticized and commodified images of women promulgated in the mass culture" (Bouson 44). Although the novel is set during the 1970"s, the decade of one of the great feminist movements in our history, Anna remains a woman who maintains herself for her husbands benefit. In a critical scene in the novel, the narrator sees Anna applying makeup. When she (the narrator) tells her that it is unnecessary where they are Anna says "He doesn't like to see me without it," and then quickly adds, "He doesn't know I wear it" (41). An overwhelming three fourths customers have accepted that the security of the internet is greater than physical banking which indicates a high level of its effectiveness. It is also evident that those customers who have got accustomed to the use of the internet for banking are likely to continue with this experience. Thus where Bank of China had quite low scores for customer friendliness and efficiency at 32 and 41 % respectively, an overwhelming 81 % of the populace still wanted to continue with internet banking. The overall banking experience has been positive for 54 % of the customers of Bank of China and 67 % of the HSBC. Thus there is adequate scope for improving its services for the customer to provide them an excellent banking experience. Since banking is a personalized event, it is of essence that the customer is provided a special touch be it the individual or the corporate. Failure to do the same will lead to loss of a client which is not good for any business. As the competition in the Chinese banking space grows, it would be important to enhance the satisfaction level to the customer. The Bank of China is a well established banking financial institution, which has a tradition of almost a century of banking, It has been able to adapt to the changing environment very rapidly over the years which is evident from a past turbulent history. Despite nationalization of the banking services in China in 1949 and subsequent liberalization in the 1990’s the Bank has demonstrated admirable resilience in adapting to the changing norms and focusing on the development of services appropriate to the needs of the time. Internationalization is the focus of the Bank of China and it has adapted maximum international banking practices in China. Cleaned the weld chamfers free from rust preventive coating. * Welded erection irons (20 Nos) on both sides of the joint & pulled the sections together by draw bolt. * Adjusting irons are welded in between the erection irons where shell overlap was found. * Checked the alignment of the shell with Piano wire arrangement. * Gap of 3mm maintained in between the shell joint. * Strong backs will be welded on one shell after initial alignment. * Took polar readings on either side of the joint & both ends of the Shells * Plotted polar diagrams and checked the eccentricity. Tolerances : * Eccentricity (radial run out ) must not exceed * +/- 1. 0 mm of the inlet & outlet rings * +/- 1. 5mm of the erection welds. * +/-1. 4mm of kiln section in the live ring. Axial untruth of live ring must not exceed +/- 1mm * After completion of alignment, weld the strong backs to the other side. Welding of Joint : * Clean the joint surface. * Preheat the joint area of shell ( 1m lg ) to 150 deg * Welding ele ctrodes are to be preheated * Complete the root run on the outer surface of the joint side with 2. 5mm electrode. * Next with 4mm electrode & then 5mm & 6 mm electrodes. Gouge & remove the root run weld from the inner surface of the joint, check with Dye penetrant for any cracks and start the root run inside. * Complete the inside welding. * Check the joint by Ultrasonic testing. * Importance of Pre-heating: * Preheating slows the cooling rate in the weld area. The first is extracted from the management of service literature. This study accommodates service and customer satisfaction as an antecedent of customer loyalty towards the company, which in turn influences the profitability, (Anderson et al, 1994). The second focuses on the individual level and contains mainly studied customer retention by customer purchase intention. This constitutes important shortcoming retention by the customer purchase intention. (Chandon et al, 2005). The third group focuses on the satisfaction loyalty link on the basis of individual level with the real purchase data. This group has tendered to reveal a weak or insignificant relationship between satisfactions and repurchase behaviours.(Bolton, 1998; Mittal and Kamakara, 2001). Data mining became an increasingly important tool to transform the collected data into information to deeply understand and know the guest satisfaction strategy used in the Brassiere. The data mining step was a very crucial stage where the researcher faced a lot of difficulties in gathering the information. Various serious questions were delivered to the manager on how they gathered the SALT score and the comments from the guest that was posted or replied online. Magazines: The monthly issue of magazines that is found in the library and hotel are used to find and travel deep into the research. The magazines have some information that states the importance of good and quality customer service in the organisation. Questionnaires: Three questionnaires were designed in order to find the need of quality customer service in the outlet Brassiere of Hilton Hotel. The second questionnaires were delivered to the manager of the Restaurant and five staffs of the Brassiere, which has two supervisors. The third questionnaires were delivered to ten guests through the permission of the manager, as it is the non-business part of survey conducted within the Restaurant outlet of Hiltons Brands. b) Secondary Research: A) Printed Source: Printed resources like books, magazines and some Hiltons customers satisfaction comments were taken into consideration in order to accomplish this research. Here the researcher discusses a few of the more common methods of collecting data in order to whole the project. a) Focus groups The researcher brought together a small number of subjects to discuss the topic on Need of Quality Customer Service in the outlet of Hilton, Brassiere. The group size was kept deliberately small, so that the members do not feel intimidated but can express opinions freely. A topic guide to aid discussion was usually prepared beforehand and the researcher usually chaired the group, to ensure that a range of aspects of the topic are explored. The discussion was written down and analysed. This focused groups provided a good amount of information and data to sum up the research. b) Direct observation In this type of study the researcher aimed to become immersed in or become part of the population being studied, so that the researcher can develop a detailed understanding of the values and beliefs held by members of the population. In this study, the researcher participated in the operation of the Brassiere observing situations where other staffs were faced with difficult moral choices. The researcher used unstructured interviewing to explore the Brassieres functioning and customer relationships through the perception. The reason for choosing this method is due to lack of adequate theory and definitions in the field to produce a deep knowledge and facts in quality customer service delivery. Data Collection: The data collection on the desired topic is a time consuming process and also requires quite a long time. It is very complicated and enforces high pressure with work load. However in completing this research, two methods of data collection is employed, which are an interview and the questionnaires. Interview was with the manager of the Brassiere Restaurant of Hilton Hotel and the questionnaire was specifically designed to know the importance of quality customer service. Pilot testing was supposed to be conducted in the college but it is not done due to lack of time and busy schedule of the people who were targeted to run a pilot test. The researcher could not conduct the pilot test as some information is not complete due to this conduct. Questionnaires that were designed were given to the working staffs of Brassiere to fill in the staff questionnaire, the manager was given the questionnaire at the time of the interview and the questionnaire designed for the customers were given to 5 customers of brassiere as permission was taken before conducting this act from the manager. Case Study: Interview and Questionnaire The researcher is an employee of the organization Hilton, working there for about 4 months. The researchers overall goal is to study and formulate the need of quality customer service in the Brassiere. The researcher mentioned numerous challenges that he faced in gathering the data from the organization, some of which needed specific, technical information to address. The reason for choosing the interview and questionnaire method of collection data from the Manager of the Restaurant (Brassiere) and from the selected customers and staffs is basically to get the actual answers and the facts that is expected. This method is very practical and correct data will be extracted. The interview method was chosen but the manager of Brassiere postponed the date and time twice due to his busy schedule and work load within the department. The interview method is very straight forward method to gather facts and practical information that is going through in daily operation of the Brassiere. However the questionnaire method is the best technique to gather data, because it is very specific and straight to the point. This method gathers more and deep information in simple words that can be evaluated according to the operation method. Thus this technique extracted more and expected data based on the topic. Sample Size: To produce the project, the research approach taken by researcher is primary and secondary. The sample size for this research was not complicated and tough but was time consuming. The development of the sample of the population in the carried research was well designed and not much complicated, because the researcher carried out this research in the organisation where he works and has been continuing the work since last four months. The designed sample size of this research is small and choosy as it is based only on one department of food and beverage operation in the Hotel- Brassiere Restaurant. The sample population comprises of The Manager of the Restaurant, Staff of the Department Brassiere, and some of the chosen guests of hotel who were sampled with the recommendation of the manager of Brassiere. The total number of people sampled comes to a total of 12 plus some of the staffs who helped as well. These populations are involved in the customer satisfaction and care line on daily basis. They all enthusiastically agreed to provide good level of information. Totally 25 different questions were of which few were received back and the filled copies are attached. (Please find the attached sheet at the back). Thus all of the staffs and the management were very helpful in achieving this task. Reliability and Validity: The research strategy carried here is significantly contributively and increased the positive response towards the research. The interview and questionnaire that was delivered was regarding the customer satisfaction and quality service in Brassiere. The questionnaires that were asked have obviously accomplished the grade of reliability and validity. Findings and Results: The section of the research will produce the summation of the data accumulated with various methods and techniques. Mainly the data extracted from the questionnaire and the interview will be focused along with other results of methods. The response is well and good from the provided questionnaires and is received back completed from the population selected. The employees capability of setting up problems is about developing human supply with essential skills to carry successful service in the near future.(H and Huang H.C (2008). How Crime and Deviance Can Be Seen As Functional for Society Essay

Crime and deviance are acts that will elicit dissent from society. They take various forms and involve various concepts and theories. It will be the aim of this paper to explore those that are considered to be functional for society. It was Emile Durkheim who first clearly established the logic behind the functional approach to the study of crime and deviance[1] when he wrote The Rules of Sociological Method and The Division of Labour[2]. In those works, Durkheim argued that crime and deviance is â€Å"an integral part of all healthy societies†. He reasoned that crime and deviance are not only inevitable, but also functional for society and that they will only be considered dysfunctional when they reach abnormally high or low levels. His theory of functionalism rooted from his amazement with how society was able to keep itself intact amidst the social, political and economic upheaval provoked by the Industrial Revolution. He found that the social glue holding everything in place was: value consensus, social solidarity and collective conscience; and that crime and deviance had a role in this equation. â€Å"Deviance† is a wide-ranging term used by sociologists referring to behaviour that is off-tangent from social normalities[3], and that â€Å"crime† is a variant of deviance, only that it â€Å"comprises activities or actions which are deemed so damaging to the interests of the community† (Pease, 1994) that some form of identification and action must be done against the perpetrator.
